Wild Wild Russia

January 20th, 2011 No comments

This post is about our North trip: two directors, their friends, my sister and me were absolutely ready for adventures in the first really warm weekend (it was only -12°C). Long New Year holidays brought to my head an idea to visit Narym hot springs (somewhere between Parabel and Narym) to recover. Yellow Squash Caviar

November 2nd, 2010 2 comments

Summer has gone away, and only cheerfully-yellow canned zucchinis remind us of warm sunbeams. If you have never tried food preservation — squash or zucchini caviar is the best thing to start with: it’s quite cheap to spoil, easy to prepare and doesn’t take too much time. Zucchini and squash dishes are not only tasty and low-calorie, but also contain vitamines and microelements important for our health.

Translation Forum Russia 2010 — in English

October 22nd, 2010 No comments

25 hours spent in a Byelorussian train going from Irkutsk to Minsk, and we’re heading to Yekaterinburg International airport. Our destination is Angelo Hotel. My mind is felt with thoughts: what’s the conference is going to be like? will it be a waste of time? why do we need it at all, we almost don’t work in the Russian market?

Translation Forum Russia 2010 — по-русски

October 21st, 2010 No comments

September 6th, 2010 1 comment

Winter’s Coming: Prepare! (a Friday post on Russian food)

August 20th, 2010 2 comments

Russia is an agricultural country. Though official statistics says agriculture adds only a small part to Russia’s GDP, I’m going to prove the opposite.

Curiouser and curiouser

August 9th, 2010 No comments

There are lots of things being discussed online every day, and the news are getting “curioser and curioser”. Today was not an exception. A lot of resources have reported one of the torrent trackers to buy a Russian village, and the most interesting thing for us was that the village is in Tomsk region (and Palex is located in Tomsk, in case you’re not aware of the fact). There are a lot of pictures on the Net at the moment that show the village Gar renamed after TorrentReactor, which in fact anyone can easily do in any image editor. And there are indeed some news saying that local authorities do not confirm this information. So far, no one knows for sure.

Viktor Tsoy and his impact on localization

June 22nd, 2010 1 comment

It was Viktor Tsoy’s birthday yesterday. I don’t think this name says something to foreigners, and absolutely not sure they would like the music. But I was really pleased yesterday to discover that Yandex legally provides all his records to listen for free (the menu and the songs indeed are in Russian).

Russia’s Day

June 14th, 2010 3 comments

It was on Saturday, June 12. And because it was Saturday, we have one more day off on Monday.

I really had to check Wikipedia about why it is June 12, and it said that the government signed the declaration of independence on that day. It was back in 1990, and it was the independence of the USSR. So much has happened since that that I totally forgot it.

Where is Palex located

June 10th, 2010 No comments

Yandex, a Russian Internet search engine, nicely allows you to search your terms only in the domains located in the same area as you. And my colleagues kept asking why it always suggests us to search in Ivanovo while we are in Tomsk, which is way too far from Ivanovo. And last time I used Yandex I occasionally noticed why:
