This is the title of the presentation I and my colleague submitted for October’s LISA conference in Budapest. The conference theme is “Building Quality, Building Customers”, and I believe my presentation title was considered irrelevant to building customers. Here I’ll clarify this title.
Quality has always been a water-cooler topic, but it’s being discussed even more actively these days. Lots of articles, blog posts, presentations and even a whole upcoming conference about it. My colleague Aleksey Chernobay made a presentation on how to achieve and maintain quality at Translation Forum Russia 2010 just a day or two ago.

New York Post reported yesterday that Novell Inc. sells itself in two parts. Although no details are provided, and the deals are apparently not set, I feel something like a nostalgy. So many things tie me with Novell…
Novell GroupWise was the application I started my career in localization from – back in 1996. Novell’s premises in Utah was a place where I spent quite a remarkable month or more and made a lot of friends from different countries. When we founded Palex, most of those friends became our first freelancers, and some of them are still working with us. Some turned into our partners or clients.
All in all, Novell played an important role in my and Palex’s life, long live Novell :)
It was just not long ago when I needed to translate quite an idiomatic text from Russian into English. My old friend Multitran is normally helpful in such cases, but it was nice to discover WikIdioms project. I learned about it from the recent issue of Multilingual magazine (fortunately or not, it was the most interesting post in this issue for me).

What are essential attributes of a successful translation project?
Anyone would mention client instructions, TM and glossary. The quality and success of a project is often measured as the degree to which those three were adhered. And indeed translators like when the TM is clean and the glossary is unambiguous, and they totally love when client instructions say: your translation should read as if it was originally written in your language. We are all artists, and we do appreciate when customers want us to show how good we are in our native language.
